Where Did JFK Go to School

John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, attended  several prestigious private schools throughout his childhood. Starting his education in Massachusetts, President Kennedy went on to attend some of the top educational institutions in the country.   Massachusetts Elementary School Years Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917, JFK attended the local public school, the Edward Devotion School, from his kindergarten year in 1922 until the beginning of third grade. Some historical records state he left earlier, though school records show that he studied there until third grade. He suffered from occasional poor health, partly as a result of having had scarlet fever, which was potentially fatal in those days. Even after recovering, he suffered from mysterious and poorly understood illnesses for a lot of his childhood and adult life. After apparently starting third grade at the Edward Devotion School, Jack and his older brother, Joe, Jr., were transferred to  Noble and Greenough School,  a private school in Dedham, Massachusetts, in part because his mother, Rose Kennedy, had given birth to several more children, including a daughter named Rosemary, who was later recognized to be developmentally disabled. Rose felt that Jack and his older brother, Joe, were running wild, and that they needed the discipline Noble and Greenough could provide. At the time, the Kennedys were one of the few Irish families to attend the school; most were Protestant, and there were no or few Jews. After the lower school at Noble and Greenough was bought by developers, Joe Kennedy, Jack’s father, helped start a new school,  the Dexter School,  a boys’ school in Brookline, Massachusetts, that now educates children from preschool through 12th grade. While at Dexter, Jack became the pet of legendary headmistress Miss Fiske, who took him on a tour of the historical sites in Lexington and Concord. After a polio epidemic broke out, Rose, ever fearful for her children’s health, decided they needed a change, and the family moved to the financial capital of the country, New York. JFK’s New York Education After moving to New York, the Kennedys set up their house in Riverdale, an upscale section of the Bronx, where Kennedy attended  Riverdale Country School  from 5th through 7th grade. In 8th grade, in 1930, he was sent to  Canterbury School,  a Catholic boarding school founded in 1915 in New Milford, Connecticut. There, JFK assembled a mixed academic record, earning good marks in mathematics, English, and history (which was always his main academic interest), while failing Latin with a dismal 55. During the spring of his 8th grade year, JFK had an appendectomy and had to withdraw from Canterbury to recover. JFK at Choate: A Member of the â€Å"Muckers Club† For his high school years, starting in 1931, JFK eventually enrolled at  Choate,  a boarding and day school in Wallingford, Connecticut. His older brother, Joe, Jr., was also at Choate for JFK’s freshman and sophomore years. JFK tried to get out of Joe’s shadow, sometimes by carrying out pranks. While at Choate, JFK blew up a toilet seat with a firecracker. After this incident, headmaster George St. John held aloft the damaged toilet seat in the chapel  and referred to the perpetrators of this antic as â€Å"muckers.† Kennedy, ever a  joker, founded the â€Å"Muckers Club,† a social group that included his friends and partners-in-crime. In addition to being a prankster, JFK played football, basketball, and baseball at Choate, and he was the business manager of his senior yearbook. In his senior year, he was also voted â€Å"most likely to succeed.† According to his yearbook, he was 5’11† and weighed 155 pounds upon graduation, and his nicknames were recorded as â€Å"Jack† and â€Å"Ken.† Despite his achievements and popularity, during his years at Choate, he also suffered from continual health problems, and he was hospitalized at Yale and at other institutions for colitis and other problems. A note about the school’s name: In JFK’s day, the school was known simply as Choate. It became Choate Rosemary Hall when Choate merged with Rosemary Hall, a girls’ school, in 1971. Kennedy graduated from Choate in 1935 and went on to eventually attend Harvard after spending some time in London and at Princeton. Choate’s Influence on JFK There is no doubt that Choate left a significant impression on Kennedy, and the release of recent archival documents shows that this impression may have been greater than previously understood. Kennedy’s famous speech that includes the line â€Å"Ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country† may have reflected a Choate headmaster’s words. Headmaster George St. John, who gave sermons that JFK attended, included similar words in his speeches. An archivist at Choate found one of St. John’s notebooks in which he wrote about a quote from a Harvard dean who said, â€Å"The youth who loves his Alma Mater will always ask, not ‘What can she do for me?’ but ‘What can I do for her?’† St. John was often heard to say, it’s not what Choate does for you, but what you can do for Choate, and Kennedy may have used this phrasing, adapted from his headmaster, in his famous inaugural address, delivered in January of 1961. Some historians, however, are critical of the idea that Kennedy would have lifted the quote from his former headmaster. In addition to this recently unearthed notebook kept by headmaster George St. John, Choate holds voluminous records related to JFK’s years at the school. The Choate Archives include about 500 letters, including correspondence between the Kennedy family and the school, and books and photos of JFK’s years at the school. JFK’s Academic Record and Harvard Application Kennedy’s academic record at Choate was unimpressive and placed him in the third quarter of his class. Kennedy’s application to Harvard and his transcript from Choate were less than spectacular. His transcript, released by the Kennedy Library, shows that JFK struggled in certain classes. He earned a mark of 62 in physics, though Kennedy earned a respectable 85 in history. On his application to Harvard, Kennedy noted that his interests lay in economics and history and that he â€Å"would like to go to the same college as my father.† Jack Kennedy, JFK’s father, wrote that â€Å"Jack has a very brilliant mind for the things in which he is interested, but is careless and lacks application in those in which he is not interested.† Perhaps JFK would not have met Harvard’s stringent admissions criteria today, but there is no doubt that, although he wasn’t always a serious student at Choate, the school played an important part in his formation. At Choate, he showed, even at age 17, some of the characteristics that would make him a charismatic and important president in later years: a sense of humor, a way with words, an interest in politics and history, a connection to others, and a spirit of perseverance in the face of his own suffering. Short Story - 1651 Words

Ten hours later†¦ Hidden from view by the thick copse of trees bordering the east side of Westview High’s running track, Tyrell Carson watched with interest as Dennis approached Harry. The two ‘teenagers’ exchanged a few words before Dennis turned and walked away. Although out of earshot, Tyrell could see well enough to know the meeting was not a drug deal, and his eyebrows drew together into a frown. Something was off, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was that had his spider-sense tingling. That morning, he’d attempted to bribe a student office aide to steal Brady and McQuaid’s files, but despite offering money and threatening violence, he’d failed his mission statement. Failure did not sit well with the arrogant teen, and†¦show more content†¦His attempt to recast his relationship with Tom hinged on his ability to articulate his genuine remorse, something he wasn’t always successful at accomplishing. But he was determined to give it his best shot. Then, if Tom was receptive to his apology, maybe they could rekindle their friendship. Lifting his hand, he rapped his knuckles on the door. There was no sound of life from within the apartment, even the television remained suspiciously silent. Surprise etched two deep lines between Booker’s brows. When he’d gone to the chapel in search of Tom, Judy had informed him he was still sick. With no option but to go to his friend’s home, Booker had taken the time to go home and shower before driving back across town. However, although Tom’s Mustang was parked outside the apartment building and a telltale strip of light shone from under the door, both indicating he was home, no one answered the door. Unsure whether to risk disturbing his sick friend, Booker pondered the benefit of knocking a second time. If he woke Tom up, the young officer would probably be in a bad mood, but if he turned around and went home, another twenty-four hours would pass before he could offer up an apology. Indecision deepened the dark-haired officer’s frown, his te eth worrying his lower lip as he mentally worked through the pros and cons. But it didn’t take long for him to make up his mind. Evaluation of the Evidence of Heat for Geology-myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theEvaluation of the Evidence of Heat for Geology. Answer: Heat inside the earth and its origin are the two prime questions that forced researchers to conduct several experiments that can answer their question. This heat played a major role in shaping the environment and geology of the present-day earth (Huang at al., 2013). 4.54 billion years ago the conditions of earth were not the same like it is now, it has undergone several changes which has finally led to sustain life. The stabilization of earths temperature was possible due to the forces of nature or otherwise the forces of heat that altered earths outer geomorphology (Summerfield, 2014). The heat energy stored inside the earth is evident on the surface through the eruption of volcanoes, the violent earthquakes that represent the movement of the tectonic plates over the molten magma, the tsunamis that occur due to the movement of the oceanic plates, and the hot springs. All these natural forces are a sign that in the interior of the earth, there is a strong presence of an energy that is capable enough to both stabilize and destabilize the earths crust. Although, the heat energy is deep seeded in the interior of the earth, it travels to the surface through the conduction, convection and radiation (Modest, 2013). Fig 1: cross-section of earths interior [Source: Duffy, 2011] Heat energy flows a hot region to a cold region through radiation. Radiation is a process of heat transfer in which heat gets transferred through energy waves like infrared radiation and electromagnetic radiation. Both the forms of radiation do not involve matter to transfer the heat energy. As far as the inner core of earth is concerned, heat energy does not travel by radiation because it lacks the radioactive elements. A majority of the radioactive elements are preset in the earths crust and the mantle. The heat energy that emanates from the decay of the radioactive materials is called the radiogenic heat (Sato, Fehler Maeda, 2012). Thorium, uranium, and potassium are responsible for the majority of the radiogenic heat that is generated inside the earth. It is a debated fact that radiogenic heat generated in the mantle results in the convectional movement of the liquid mantle. Thus, radiation does not a big role in the transfer of heat energy from the core to the earth surface. De pending on the fact that core being made up of only nickel and iron which together is called the siderophile, does not conduct heat energy through radiation. This knowledge helps in the mining of the radioactive substances which is available both in the crust and the mantle. Radioactive elements on the other hand gives an added advantage in the medical research, treatment of several diseases, generation of thermal power (Chamorro et al., 2012). The heat energy in the inner core of earth is around 9000-degree Fahrenheit. The pressure inside the earths inner core is so huge that the metals get squeezed and are even not able to move in the liquid form (fig 1). However, this particular layer vibrates like a solid due to the intense pressure. While the outer core is a like a mass of hot metals in liquid state which is made up of nickel and iron. Heat energy from inner core to the outer core gets transferred through conduction. The apparently, vibrating semi solid core conducts the heat energy to the upper outer core through conduction. This heat again after crossing the lower and upper mantle moves to the next layer, which is called crust. The heat energy again gets dissipated through conduction which contributes to heating the earths crust (Kontny Bogusz, 2012). These conductions of heat energy make the geothermally hot water rise out of the crust, which are termed as geothermal springs. These geothermal springs have high mine ral content and tapping this energy can help in the generation of electricity. The next layer after the inner core is the outer core which being in liquid state conducts the heat energy to the next layer through the process of convection. The convectional heat flows into the next layer called the mantle which is composed of dense molten rock. This is the layer upon which the tectonic plates move. There are different types of crust which moves upon the fluid mantle, such as the oceanic crust, continental crust. When two continental crust collides with each other, one crust moves upon the other which leads to the formation of mountains (Suarez et al., 2014). The opposite happens when the two crusts reside which leads to the formation of furrows. Also when an oceanic crust collides with the continental crust, the oceanic crust submerges into the continental crust. The submergence of oceanic crust leads to the meltdown of the rocks that are in connection with the fluid mantle. Due to the continuous meltdown of the rock materials, a phenomenon called churning occurs which leads to the movement of the hot molten rock to the upper layers and the cold rock particles to the lower layer (Fyfe, 2012). This geological phenomenon is termed as convectional movement of the molten magma. This convectional heat flow lead to the direct buildup of the oceanic crust and helped in the formation of mountains and other geological landforms. Therefore, from the above discussion it can be concluded that the heat inside the earth that gets transferred to the surface of the earth through the process of conduction, convection, and radiation plays a major role in generation of energy, formation of geological landforms, and even mining of the radioactive substances for medical treatment. The heat that is stored inside the core of the earth is not directly transferred through the various layers like the inner and outer core, the upper and the lower mantle and the crust. The different layers although transfer the heat energy, however are geologically not made of same contents. Hence, the conduction process differs from the other layers. However, each and every layer contributes to the buildup of heat and the different layers conduct the heat through different processes, which ultimately reaches to the surface of the earth and are both measurable and can be harnessed for energy generation. Virtual Reality Essays - Virtual Reality, Head-mounted Display

Virtual Reality Virtual Reality - What it is and How it Works Imagine being able to point into the sky and fly. Or perhaps walk through space and connect molecules together. These are some of the dreams that have come with the invention of virtual reality. With the introduction of computers, numerous applications have been enhanced or created. The newest technology that is being tapped is that of artificial reality, or virtual reality (VR). When Morton Heilig first got a patent for his Sensorama Simulator in 1962, he had no idea that 30 years later people would still be trying to simulate reality and that they would be doing it so effectively. Jaron Lanier first coined the phrase virtual reality around 1989, and it has stuck ever since. Unfortunately, this catchy name has caused people to dream up incredible uses for this technology including using it as a sort of drug. This became evident when, among other people, Timothy Leary became interested in VR. This has also worried some of the researchers who are trying to create very real application s for medical, space, physical, chemical, and entertainment uses among other things. In order to create this alternate reality, however, you need to find ways to create the illusion of reality with a piece of machinery known as the computer. This is done with several computer-user interfaces used to simulate the senses. Among these, are stereoscopic glasses to make the simulated world look real, a 3D auditory display to give depth to sound, sensor lined gloves to simulate tactile feedback, and head-trackers to follow the orientation of the head. Since the technology is fairly young, these interfaces have not been perfected, making for a somewhat cartoonish simulated reality. Stereoscopic vision is probably the most important feature of VR because in real life, people rely mainly on vision to get places and do things. The eyes are approximately 6.5 centimeters apart, and allow you to have a full-colour, three-dimensional view of the world. Stereoscopy, in itself, is not a very new id ea, but the new twist is trying to generate completely new images in real- time. In 1933, Sir Charles Wheatstone invented the first stereoscope with the same basic principle being used in today's head-mounted displays. Presenting different views to each eye gives the illusion of three dimensions. The glasses that are used today work by using what is called an electronic shutter. The lenses of the glasses interleave the left-eye and right-eye views every thirtieth of a second. The shutters selectively block and admit views of the screen in sync with the interleaving, allowing the proper views to go into each eye. The problem with this method though is that you have to wear special glasses. Most VR researchers use complicated headsets, but it is possible to create stereoscopic three-dimensional images without them. One such way is through the use of lenticular lenses. These lenses, known since Herman Ives experimented with them in 1930, allow one to take two images, cut them into thin vertical slices and interleave them in precise order (also called multiplexing) and put cylinder shaped lenses in front of them so that when you look into them directly, the images correspond with each eye. This illusion of depth is based on what is called binocular parallax. Another problem that is solved is that which occurs when one turns their head. Nearby objects appear to move more than distant objects. This is called motion parallax. Why is this Important? This is fundamentally important as Watts is seen to attempt to critically highlight some of the more predominant concerns pertaining towards the establishment of what is the true meaning of life. By providing several different answers to the question, Watts is seen to try and tackle the question from a number of different angle as he attempts each of us establish the meaning of life. An Understanding of how Joseph Campbell Explains the Role of Clowns in Religion According to Campbell, clown religions and clowns are especially. The use of clowns in numerous Celtic and Germanic myths essentially serves to show that although the outward appearance of some of the deities as represe nted by some clown figures might be marred and of a rather grotesque nature, we should always endeavor to look through the often very funny exterior forms and find the ultimate image. By adopting this approach, we can essentially learn to disregard the physical appearance of the individuals we meet and understand them better (Campbell and Moyers). Campbell’s view of the role played by clowns essentially fits in with my own views as I always try to obtain a somewhat deeper understanding of persons that I chance to encounter and interact with. By practicing this approach, I have generally managed to become a fundamentally better person having a deeper appreciation for...An example of this instance is seen in the story of the secret of the Lotus flower where Buddha was seen to make his point by holding a golden lotus in his palms while standing before his followers, most of his followers were however unable to understand what exactly Buddha was attempting to say to them and only Mahakasyapa managed to understand what exactly Buddha was attempting to express. Mahakasyapa’s only indication that he had understood the message was a slight smile. In communicating this information it is clearly seen that no words intervened but yet the entire message was clearly understood by Mahakasyapa. This caused Buddha to sufficiently determine that indeed Mahakasyapa was the best individual who could be selected and chosen to succeed him (Smith, 87). In some of the Buddhist sects, the message being given by the teacher is seen to have a somewhat two pronged approach and while most people only understand the surface meaning of the teaching, the more perceptive disciples are able to deeply understand the message and sufficiently decipher its symbolism so as to truly understand its meaning

Write a 3 page response to an argument presented in the reading Essay

Write a 3 page response to an argument presented in the reading - Essay Example The author points out however that happiness is a subjective feeling and what makes one person happy does not necessarily mean it will make the other happy. Happiness is a subjective feeling which has never really been completely achieved by man throughout history. In fact as time goes and years passes, happiness continues to dwindle and people become more frustrated and cases of neurotics increase. Civilization has in fact contributed greatly to the reduction of happiness in man. This is so because humans are under more pressure now and life is much more complicated than it was during the earlier years of primitive living and conditions. This is evidenced by the writing of the writer â€Å"†¦what we call our civilization is largely responsible for our misery, and that we should be much happier if we gave it up and returned to primitive conditions (Freud 33).† There is an argument that civilization has brought about technology and made man superior to the nature but this in the end has not brought happiness â€Å"one would like to ask: is there, then, no positive gain in pleasure, no unequivocal increase in my feeling of happiness†¦?† (Freud 35). Even with development of fancy technical equipment and gadgets such as ships and telephones, people are still miserable as they do not get to be with their loved ones who are away. The technology has made people grow apart and lifestyles to change for the worse. The technological advancements and the civilizations mentioned in the article lead to development of difficult situations and restrain the life of people even more and further reduce their happiness level. Happiness as mentioned in the article is a subjective feeling and which cannot be forced on people and cannot be experienced by everyone. According to Pascal (2008), happiness is defined differently by different people and what may cause happiness to one person may not necessarily emanate the

A Taste of Honey Essay Example for Free

A Taste of Honey Essay In a normal mother-daughter relationship a mothers part is to provide love and affection all the time. A mother should provide this love and affection even more when the daughter is feeling depressed and down in the dumps. A normal mother should care for her daughter when she is ill and nurse her back to full health. She should give her daughter advice when problems come up and her get through the problem by helping to come up with a solution. A mother should guide her daughter through life and prepare her for its challenges. A mother should learn from her mistakes and ensure that her daughter doesnt make the same mistakes. A mother should provide stability for her daughter. She should do this by giving her a good home in one place, by providing food and doing things like washing clothes for her. A mother should ensure that her daughter gets a good standard of education. She should encourage her daughter in everything she does and push her so that she achieves it to the highest standard. A mother should teach her daughter the differences between right and wrong so that it will give her a chance to build up her own set of principles in life. The most important thing a mother should do is give her daughter unconditional love and sacrifice her pleasure for the sake of her child. The daughters part in a normal mother-daughter relationship is to have respect for her mother and to not do things like calling her by her first name. A daughter should not take her mother for granted and should help her with the housework as much as possible. A daughter should take care of her mother when she is ill. At the start of the play Helen and Jo have just moved into a new flat. Immediately we see that Jo has a lack of respect for her mother, Helen. I know this because Jo calls her by her by her first name. JO: Can I have that chair, Helen? We see that Helen doesnt care about Jos well being and whether shes hurt or not. I know this because Jo wants to put a scarf around an unshaded light bulb and Helen just sits by and watches her burn her hand. JO: Can I have that chair, Helen? (Jo takes chair from Helen, stands on it and wraps her scarf round light bulb burning herself in the process) There are many examples of Helen not caring including the time when Jo wants to turn on the gas stove but she is afraid she will cause a gas explosion. Helen doesnt come and help her like a normal mother would but just gives her a stupid piece of advice. JO: Which knob do I turn? HELEN: Turn them all. Youre bound to find the right one in the end. In the play we also see that Helen is not teaching Jo the basic rights and wrongs of life. For example when Jo tells Helen that she has stolen some bulbs she doesnt tell her off like any normal mother would but she condones it. HELEN: Where did you get those bulbs? JO: the Park. The gardener had just planted about two hundred. I didnt think hed miss half a dozen. HELEN: Thats the way to do things. Helen doesnt care what Jo does with her life and whether she gets proper education or not. For example when Jo tells Helen she is going to leave school, Helen just tells her to do what she likes. HELEN: its your life. Ruin it your own way. A normal mother would have tried to persuade her daughter to finish school and get good qualifications. When Helen recognises Jos talent as an artist she just gives her daughter a backhanded compliment, whereas a normal mother would praise her and push her to go to art school. HELEN: I didnt know I had such a talented daughter. Look at that, its good isnt it? JO: Im not just talented. Im geniused HELEN: I think Ill hang this on the wall somewhere. Now where will it be least noticeable The above quote gives me the impression that Helen maybe wants to encourage her but doesnt know how to. Helen has provided no stability in Jos life. Jo was always moving houses and schools. JO: Too many schools and too many different places. This was because Helen was always running away from one of her fancy men. JO: Why did we have to come here anyway? We were all right at the other place. HELEN: I was fed up with the other place JO: You mean you were running away from somebody Helen is a bad influence on Jo and does not act appropriately in front of her. When Peter arrives she allows him to make sexual advances towards her and doesnt really do anything to stop it. PETER: Arent you wearing your girdle? HELEN: Now Peter PETER: Whoops! HELEN: Well you certainly liberate something in me and it definitely aint maternal instincts. A normal mother would do this sort of thing in private without the presence of her daughter. Another example of Helen being a bad influence on Jo is when she encourages Jo to drink. When Jo refuses Helen almost tries to force it down her. HELEN: have some of this if youre cold JO: You know I dont like it HELEN: have you tried it? JO: No HELEN: Then get it down you A normal mother wouldnt force her 15-year-old daughter to drink. Helen doesnt sacrifice her pleasure for Jo. For example she always throws Jo out of bed, every time one of her fancy men comes. JO: You should have asked him to stay. It wouldnt be the first time Ive been thrown out of bed to make room for one of your A normal mother would go somewhere else. Another example of this is when Helen decides to go to Blackpool with Peter for the weekend. She just leaves Jo to fend for herself with only a quid to live on. HELEN: Can you give us a quid, Peter? Id better leave her some money. We might decide to make a weekend of it and she cant just live on grass and fresh air. Jo is very insecure and is afraid of the dark. JO: Im not frightened of the darkness outside. Its the darkness inside houses I dont like This is probably because Helen left her alone a lot of times since she was a child. Jo is very possessive about her mother. JO: You leave me alone. And leave my mother alone too. This also shows she is insecure. As I said at the start of the essay about Jo not having any respect for Helen, Helen also doesnt have any respect for her daughter as she calls her names like a whore. HELEN: You know what theyve been calling you round here? A silly little whore Jo craves her mothers love and affection throughout the play and for most of the time she doesnt get it. Helen directs her love and affection to her fancy men and not to Jo, leaving her jealous. HELEN: Cant bear to see me being affectionate with anybody JO: Youve certainly never been affectionate with me. You have seen in the above examples about how Helen is not a good mother but Jo is not completely innocent. There are examples of Jo often trying to spite her mother deliberately and annoying her. One example is when she makes her mothers coffee as weak as she can, as she knows she likes it strong. PETER: What sort of coffee is this anyway? It an hardly squeeze itself through the spout HELEN: She always does that. Makes it as weak as she can as she knows I like it strong Between Helen and Jo there are sometimes fleeting moments of affection shared. An example of Helen caring is when Jo tells her mother that she is getting married at her age. Helen tells Jo that she should learn from her mistakes and not ruin her life by getting married. HELEN: Oh Jo, youre only a kid. Why dont you learn from my mistakes? It takes half your life to learn from your own. This is one of the few moments in the play where Helen is acting like a proper mother and giving the advice that she should give. When Helen and Jo are having this conversation they are at the point of having a heart to heart when they suddenly start having the normal banter that they do. This has happened often in the play and it gives me the impression that they cant communicate with each other properly and cant talk about their feelings openly. Throughout the play Helen often refers to Jo as she as if there is a third person in the room. Helen most often does this when she is frustrated with Jo. At a point in the play when Helen is arguing with Jo and is really fed up with her, she says HELEN: Youre asking for a bloody good hiding, lady. Just be careful. Oh shed drive you out of your mind A normal mother would talk to her daughter directly. Helen and Jo often have conversations a normal mother and daughter wouldnt talk about. They talk about things like sex. For example JO: He was thin, weak-chinned, with a funny turned up nose. HELEN: It wasnt the nose I was interested in. When Helen and Jo are in the same room together the atmosphere is always fraught and the pair are always making sarcastic comments to each other. For example HELEN: Do I look all right? Pass me my fur. Oh my fur, do you like it? JO I bet somebodys missing their cat. Helen has never given a second thought to Jo. As soon as a better offer comes along she would take off and leave Jo alone. This comes true when she gets married to Peter as she just leaves to go to live with Peter leaving Jo with no money and no support. Jo is all alone. In the time that Helen is away Jo becomes pregnant. The boy is gone and she needs someone to look after her properly. She finds that someone when she meets Geoff. He is a homosexual boy and he looks after Jo throughout most of her pregnancy. In other words he became a mother figure to Jo. He did all the things Helen should have done like the cooking, cleaning and teaching her things about the pregnancy. When Helen comes back she gets rid of Geoff. So as always a really good thing in Jos life has been short-lived and she is right back to where she started. Helen comes back because Peter has chucked her out. She has nowhere to go. This gives me the impression that Helen only sees Jo as a convenience. In conclusion this assignment proves that Helen and Jo have an abnormal mother-daughter relationship. There is a lack of respect between the pair and they cant communicate properly. They cant express their feelings towards each other even though deep down they do love each other. The assignment proves that that Helen is not a good mother and doesnt know any parenting skills. It also proves that Jo is a neglected daughter who craves her mothers love and affection. Having said that, Helen is not a completely bad mother and has given her daughter worthwhile advice sometimes and Jo has done some bad things to her mother sometimes. The title of the play is A TASTE OF HONEY and it means a little bit of sweetness in life. In the play Helen and Jo have A TASTE OF HONEY in their life. Helen got it from Peter. Jo got it from the boy and Geoff. It was short-lived and they ended up right back to where they started. I thought that A TASTE OF HONEY an interesting play and was quite sad reading about a daughter who was rejected for most of her life and a mother who didnt know how to be a good parent.

Symbols and Characters of Bread Givers. Essay -- Essays Papers

Symbols and Characters of "Bread Givers". One of the significant features of Jewish history throughout many centuries was migration. From the ancient pre-Roman times to medieval Spain to the present days the Jews were expelled from the countries they populated, were forced out by political, cultural and religious persecution, and sometimes were motivated to leave simply to escape economic hardship and to find better life for themselves and for their children. One of the interesting pages of Jewish history was a massive migration from Eastern Europe to America in the period between 1870 an 1920. In that period more than two million Jews left their homes in Russia, Poland, Galicia, and Romania and came to the New World. The heaviest volume of that wave of Jewish emigration came between 1904 and 1908, when more than 650 thousand Jewish emigrants came to the US. The Eastern European Jews fled from pogroms, religious persecution and economic hardship. We can learn about those times from history text books, but a better way to understand the feelings and thoughts of the struggling emigrants is to learn a story from an insider, who herself lived there and experienced first hand all the challenges and hardships of the emigrants' life. Anzia Yezierska's novel "Bread Givers" is a story that lets the reader to learn about the life of Jewish Emigrants in the early Twentieth Century on Manhattan's lower East Side through the eyes of a poor young Jewish woman who came from Poland and struggled to break out from poverty, from tyrant old traditions of her father, and to find happiness, security, love and understanding in the new country. The book is rich with symbolism. Different characters and situations in the novel symbolize different parts of the emigrants' community and challenges that they faced. The characters range from the father, the symbol of the Old World, to the mother who symbolizes struggles and hopelessness of the women of the Old World, to the sisters and their men, who together represent the choices and opportunities that opened before the young generation of the Jewish emigrants in the New World. The father of the storyteller, Sarah Smolinsky, is an orthodox rabbi, Mosheh Smolinsky, with rigid old-fashioned conceptions, who cannot or simply does not make an effort to realize himself in America and spends his days poisoning lives of his ... ...e them. And they, with all their education, are under my feet, just because I got the money." Through the lives of different characters the author tells about struggles and sacrifices that any emigrants have to face when they come to a new country and try to get on their feet. The first generation usually gains the least, because older people already have deeply rooted cultural traditions and language barrier that do not let them to assimilate and to feel fully at home in the new place. Just like Sarah's parents in "Bread Givers" the majority of first generation older emigrants that I know feel somewhat alienated and disadvantaged in America. Many of them were naà ¯ve and thought that America was a Golden Amadina where "money grows on the trees". Many were intelligent enough to realize that they were going to a tough land of opportunities where they would have to fight and struggle for a spot under the sun. But those who were realistic came here anyway, because they hoped for a better future for their children who could fully benefit from new opportunities, ethnic equa lity, and democracy that the New World had to offer. Physics Archimedes Principle Lab Report

Measurement of Mass, Volume, and Density through Archimedes Principle Overview: The purpose of this experiment was to measure the density of a solid and a liquid using Archimedes principle. Archimedes is one of the greatest inventors and mathematicians of all time. The principle we used in this experiment was discovered when Archimedes stepped into a full bath tub. Using Archimedes principle, we were able to determine the density of a lead rod, water, and an unknown liquid.Physical Data: Name| MW (g/mol)| ? (g/cm3)| bp (? C)| mp (? For part A of the experiment, we were able to use the spring constant found from the previous lab, in order to help determine the change in mass and volume of an object, and the density of an unknown liquid. The spring constant that was found from the previous lab was 0. 23 N/m. In part B of the experiment, we were able to determine the change in mass of the lead rod from the air to the water and the volume of the lead rod. After conducting five trials, we were able to find the change in mass of the lead rod by using the spring constant formula of F=kx. After modifying the formula to solve for mass, we were able to find the change in mass for each trial by multiplying the spring constant and displacement of the lead rod in air versus water, then dividing by gravity. The average change in mass was found to be 9. 8X10-4g. Once we had found the mass of the lead rod, we were able to find calculate the volume of the lead rod by modifying the buoyancy force formula to solve for the volume of the object. Find that formula, we divided the mass of the lead rod by the density of water as shown in the table of literature. The average volume of the lead rod was found to be 3. 422 cm3. In part C of this experiment, we were able to determine the change in mass of the lead rod from air to an unknown liquid and the density of the unknown liquid. We used the same method in part B to calculate the change in mass of the lead rod. The average change in mass of the lead rod in the unknown liquid was found to be †¦ Since the volume of an object does not change when submerged in various liquids, we were able to use the average volume of the lead rod found in part B. then, we were able to find the density of the unknown liquid by dividing the mass of the lead rod by the volume of the lead rod. Average density of the unknown liquid was found to be 1. 44 g/cm3. Since the unknown liquid had an aroma of rubbing alcohol, we hypothesized that the unknown liquid was a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. Using Archimedes principle, our hypothesis can be supported since the average density of the unknown liquid was 0. 843 g/mL. An alternative method for this experiment would be to set up the beaker so that the liquid level would be completely leveled, versus when a person lifts the beaker with an unleveled liquid level.A way a person could do this would be to place a book under the beaker with a leveled liquid level, so that the lead rod is equally and fully submerged in the liquid. Conclusion: The objective of this experiment was to determine the mass and volume of an object and the density of an unknown liquid using Archimedes Principle. For part A, we used the spring constant from the previous lab to help determine the mass of the lead rod in part B. The displacement of the lead rod from the air to the water was found in order to help determine the average mass of the lead rod.The average change in mass of the lead rod from air to water was 9. 38Ãâ€"10-4g. The average volume of the lead rod was 9. 38Ãâ€"10-7cm. In part C an unknown liquid was used. A similar method was used to determine the average change in mass of the lead rod in the unknown liquid, which was found to be 7. 04Ãâ€"10-4g. Since the volume of an object does not change in different liquids, the volume of the object found in part B was used in part C to help determine the density of the unknown liquid. The density of the unknown liquid was 0. 75g/mL.

Presenting the Budget Essay

INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY: V.C. & Associates along with New York City propose to offer a job training program housed within the NYC Department of Social Services beginning July 1, 2013 the beginning of the fiscal period 2013. STATEMENT OF NEED: Since Super Storm Sandy in 2012, years of collaboration within the Mayor’s office to crackdown on slumlords, the market crash of 2008 and the continuing efforts to keep New Yorkers safe since 2001, an influx of jobs have been created throughout New York. Since 2007, City-certified Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises have been awarded over 26,000 City prime contracts and subcontracts worth more than $1.9 billion. (nyc.gov 2014) An evaluation of high growth and rapid demand in office administration, security, construction and apartment maintenance poises a need for employable individuals to enter the market place. The Department of Social Services has administrative responsibilities for families not only in crisis but those seeking to enrich their lives t hrough training to better prepare them for the workforce. Presenting the Budget  2 Once individuals are provided hands-on job training workshops they will be able to go out and seek employment. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Human Resources Administration, Department of Social Services (DSS) provides services and temporary assistance that help families and individuals with economic and social service needs to achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency and that help other families and individuals remain self-sufficient. (nyc.gov 2014) Fifteen percent of U.S. adults lack a high school diploma or high school equivalency credential, and another 30 percent have a high school diploma with no postsecondary education. Collectively, these individuals make up over half of today’s unemployed adults. Adults without a high school diploma are more likely to be in need of temporary cash assistance and in-kind benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, and housing subsidies. BENEFITS: The primary benefit from this project would be to strengthen the link between employers’ urgent needs and individuals who are job ready because of hands-on job training workshops. Having a few companies commit to expressing their needs would allow DSS to deploy skilled individuals in the workforce instead of a company having to train them. For example, within the office administration training, hands on training would consist of building confidence in Microsoft Word and Excel because these two are the basics for administration assistance. Presenting the Budget 3 PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT: Measurements Measure Target InputCost to provide hands-on job training workshops in office administration, security, construction and apartment maintenanceAs budgeted for $500,000 over 3 years beginning Outcome Over 85% of trained individuals placed in the workforce. Sustain initial 85% placement rate for years two and three. EfficiencyCost per individual trainedApproximately $625 to train each individual to receive employment and become self-sufficient. EffectivenessPercent of individuals  placed Provide repeat workshop for 20% of population if requested after placed and not successful Quality or ProcessPercent of employers satisfied with placed individuals at the end of six monthsOn a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very satisfied and 1 being dissatisfied, projected target will be between seven and ten. Equity Percent of individuals who remain in the workforce one year after placement.70 percent of individuals still with initial placement after one year. COSTS: The program costs are mostly allocated to personnel and contractual services because of the nature of the program. The Social Services Department would have one full-time equivalent employee charged 35% of the time to the program to oversee the operations for the next three years. In addition to the full-time staff member, a part-time staff member will be hired to perform all functions related to carrying out day to day duties related to but not limited to contracted personnel scheduling for training sessions, classroom and equipment set-up, ordering supplies, recordkeeping of stipends associated with travel for offsite visits. Presenting the Budget 4 Other costs associated with the program are computer and software purchases in year one, which the computer costs are lower in years two and three because only software licenses should be updated or additional software purchases required but computers purchased in year one should have a useful life of five years which will exceed the program by two years. STAFFING IMPACT: One part-time employee will begin working in FY2013. For fiscal years 2014 and 2015 an additional part-time employee will be employed to assist because of anticipated numbers of individuals will increase in years two and three. Within the small business sector contracted instructors/trainers from each of the four sectors will provide employment and training services for low-skilled, unemployed adults, including veterans for the workforce. These instructors will be vetted from NYC’s Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) Program, the Emerging Business Enterprise (EBE) Program and the Locally-base d Business Enterprise (LBE) Program. Breakdown of Expected Individuals Per Sector 32040%Office Administration 28035%Security 8010%Apartment maintenance 12015%Construction 800100% OPTIONS: A cost of $625 per individual for training is pennies compared to what the state and federal assistance cost would be for each of the anticipated 800 participants in one year. For example, in New York State an individual could receive $600 monthly for housing and food assistance. The cost of three years of training 800 individuals would be equal to that of the state paying 800 welfare recipients in one month. Presenting the Budget 5 To ensure that our nation rises to the task of developing a skilled workforce that meets the demands of employers, policymakers need to widen their focus to expanding education and training to lower-skilled adults and youth, including high school dropouts, adults who have a high school diploma or GED but are not college ready, and adults with low English proficiency. Without a targeted strategy to educate more low-skilled Americans, the U.S. will continue to lag behind in measures of educational attainment and hence in economic competitiveness. (Foster, Strawn, Duke 2011) After evaluating years one and two the Department should determine whether additional funding should be requested for additional years. The economy will continue to grow and no deserving individual should be left behind because of lack of skills. Budget allocation Object codes201320142015 Personnel services (PS), Total: Full-time, permanent=FTE ($125,000*.35) 43,750 46,000 48,000 Part-time (1 employee yr 1; yrs 2 & 3 = 1.5 employees) 30,000 40,000 40,000 Contractual (Professional trainers from various industries) 20,000 55,000 28,000 Nonpersonnel services (OTPS), Total: Supplies 20,000 30,000 25,000 Computers & Computer Software 25,000 10,000 8,500 Rental Equipment 5,000 7,000 6,500 Travel Benefits 2,750 5,000 4,500 Social Services Contractual services Charges, awards, grants and subsidies Bonds and other Fund, Total: General funds Federal funds State funds146,500193,000160,5000 Other funds Employees, Total ACCOMPANYING LEGISLATION: No legislation is required to implement this program. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Adult formula program provides employment and training services for disadvantaged, low-skilled, unemployed, and underemployed adults, including veterans, within the public workforce system. The program is well-positioned to meet the needs of adult job seekers and support the economic recovery by helping adult customers understand their skills in the context of the current labor market and improve those skills to find better jobs with career pathways. Specifically, the WIA Adult formula program: †¢ Supports an economy that is built to last by aligning the skills of American workers with needs of businesses so they can compete in the rapidly evolving job market of the 21st century; †¢ Transforms the unemployment system into a reemployment system by providing adult job seekers with job placement, career counseling, skills-training, credential attainment, and labor exchange services that make it possible for disadvantaged, low-skilled, and underemployed adult workers to get back to work quickly; †¢ Puts veterans back to work by providing priority of service to veterans and eligible spouses; and †¢ Offers seamless service delivery  with multiple workforce-related programs housed in American Job Centers. A consolidated entry point provides the best value in terms of positive outcomes for job seekers and business customers by capitalizing on the administrative efficiencies and shared resources. (nyc.gov 2014) The Department will award 4 – 5 competitive grants ranging in size from $2 – 3 million to regions to implement sector-based strategies to meet the dual goals of providing customized solutions for business while providing training and career advancement opportunities for targeted populations.
